Eaton is present at the Underground Energy and Telecom Networks trade show to showcase innovations in protection, monitoring, and connectivity, which are essential for increasing resilience and modernizing clean energy infrastructure and power distribution in Brazil.

Underground networks currently represent a strategic portion of the national power distribution infrastructure. Faced with the constant challenge for utilities to improve reliability and resilience, Eaton, a global leader in intelligent power management, is taking advantage of its participation in the Underground Energy and Telecom Networks trade show to exhibit a complete ecosystem of solutions aimed at the sector.

The event is a key meeting point for experts and decision-makers looking to integrate new technologies into existing grids. Focused on supporting implementation, operation, and maintenance phases, the company is reinforcing its commitment to power system modernization, aligning operational efficiency with the robustness required for the future of energy sustainability.

Protection Technology and Data Intelligence

One of Eaton‘s highlights at the event is the new MPCV-NXG controller for network protectors. This microprocessor-based relay is designed for precision performance in modern installations or retrofit processes. Its ability to distinguish between reverse currents caused by actual faults and those originating from distributed generation ensures that grid protection remains highly selective without compromising system stability. Additionally, the equipment offers advanced features such as a web interface, DNP3 communication, and waveform capture.

Software and infrastructure for power grids

Beyond protection hardware, the company is highlighting CYMCAP, a software specialized in calculating the thermal capacity (ampacity) of power cables. The tool is essential for engineers planning the expansion of underground systems, allowing them to simulate various installation scenarios and soil conditions. Optimizing these parameters not only improves power transfer but also reduces critical overheating risks, increasing the lifespan of assets and the efficiency of electrical infrastructure.

Complementing the portfolio, the LIPE (Line Installation and Protective Equipment) line offers vital accessories for medium-voltage systems. With plans to introduce pad-mounted reclosers in Brazil by 2027, Eaton is reaffirming its investment in the growth of the national underground market.

João Moura, Product Engineer at Eaton, noted:

“The underground grid market has very specific characteristics and requires solutions developed for different challenges, ranging from planning and cable sizing to grid protection, connection, and operation. Eaton has a broad portfolio for this ecosystem, and the event is an important opportunity to show how these technologies can work in a complementary way in projects to modernize and increase the resilience of electrical infrastructure.”

The company’s move reflects a clear trend: digitalization and electrification are non-negotiable pillars for a sustainable future. By investing in technologies that enable smarter energy management, the sector gains momentum to overcome historical bottlenecks, ensuring a more secure distribution network that is prepared for climate challenges and the growing demand for renewable energy sources.
