Itaipu Binacional has issued an urgent alert following a significant rise in the Paraná River level, threatening homes and structures along the Brazilian bank.

The Itaipu hydroelectric plant raised a red flag this Monday (12th) due to a rapid increase in the water volume of the Paraná River. The drastic rise is a direct result of storms that hit the region over the last 24 hours, requiring constant monitoring by the plant’s technical teams on the border between Brazil and Paraguay.

With water levels reaching 115.39 meters near the Friendship Bridge — a significant jump from the 110.50 meters recorded the previous day — the hydrological situation requires caution. Data was recalculated by the Hydrological Studies Division of the Operations Superintendency, highlighting the impact of heavy rainfall in the Paraná and Iguaçu river basins.

Risks and mobilization on the Brazilian bank

After affecting neighboring communities in Paraguayan territory, the flooding now directly threatens infrastructure and housing located on the Brazilian side. Security and protection agencies have already been activated to mitigate damage and ensure the safety of riverside residents.

Given this scenario, there is a forecast of potential impacts on structures and homes located on the Brazilian side. Municipal and state Civil Defense agencies have been notified.

Meanwhile, on the Paraguayan bank, a task force comprised of volunteers, the Armed Forces, the National Navy, and Itaipu Binacional‘s social responsibility teams continues to provide humanitarian aid. The goal is to complete the preventive evacuation of dozens of families in the vulnerable San Rafael neighborhood.

Outlook for the power sector

The management of the hydroelectric plant, controlled in Brazil by ENBPar and in the neighboring country by Ande, remains on high alert. The current priority is the rescue and support of residents in flood zones, while engineers analyze the behavior of the river basins for the coming days, ensuring the operational safety of the clean energy giant.
