Brazil is on the verge of reaching the milestone of 1 million light electrified vehicles in circulation, driven by record-breaking sales and the expansion of charging infrastructure.
The Brazilian sustainable automotive market is experiencing a historic moment, approaching the significant mark of 1 million light electrified vehicles in circulation. Data from the historical series of ABVE (Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association) reveals that the circulating fleet reached 950,183 units by the end of August 2026, with expectations of surpassing one million as early as September.
This achievement is propelled by a remarkable performance in sales, which recorded 57,386 registrations in August alone. This growth rate not only elevates the standard of electric mobility in the country but also positions Brazil as an increasingly relevant player in the global energy transition, evidencing growing consumer interest in clean energy solutions.
Exponential Growth of the Electrified Fleet
The first eight months of 2026 were a period of unprecedented expansion for electrified vehicles. Brazil registered 328,477 new units, an impressive increase of 160.5% compared to the same period in 2025, when 126,071 units were sold. In just two-thirds of the year, the sector has already surpassed the total volume of 2025 by 47%, which closed with 223,912 sales.
For the second consecutive month, registrations exceeded the 50,000-unit mark, with the monthly average reaching 41,060 vehicles, consolidating a record-breaking trajectory for the sustainable automotive market.
Plug-in Vehicles Lead the Way
The plug-in electric vehicle category dominated sales in August, accounting for 83.1% of the total with 47,701 units. Within this segment, 100% electric models stood out, achieving a new monthly record with 27,166 registrations and a 47.3% market share.
This result marks a significant 256% growth compared to August 2025, indicating a strong adoption of pure electromobility. Plug-in hybrids also contributed significantly, totaling 20,535 units and representing 35.8% of electrified vehicle sales.
Performance of Conventional Hybrids
Conventional hybrid models, which do not require external charging, totaled 9,685 units in August, corresponding to 16.9% of the electrified market. Of this total, gasoline hybrids registered 4,445 sales, showing a notable 94% growth over 12 months.
Meanwhile, flex-fuel hybrids, offering the versatility of ethanol, totaled 5,240 units, representing 9.1% of sales. Despite a slight monthly decrease, these models demonstrated robust growth of 133% compared to August 2025, reinforcing the diversity of options in more sustainable vehicles.
Drivers of Electromobility
ABVE points out that the consolidation of automakers in Brazil has been crucial for the increased demand for electrified vehicles. The presence of major players like BYD, GWM, Omoda, Pace/GM, and Geely in the national landscape instills greater consumer confidence.
In parallel, the expansion of charging infrastructure is a key factor. Currently, the country has at least 25,429 public and semi-public charging stations, ensuring greater convenience and peace of mind for electric vehicle owners, whether in urban areas or on highways.
Geographic Distribution of Sales
The growing adoption of light electrified vehicles is reflected in a wide geographic distribution. In August 2026, São Paulo led the state ranking with 14,982 units (26.1%), followed by the Federal District (5,048 units, 8.8%) and Minas Gerais (4,293 units, 7.5%). Paraná and Rio de Janeiro also ranked among the top five states with the highest sales volume.
In the municipal sphere, the capital city of São Paulo led with 5,162 units (9%), while Brasília occupied the second position with 5,048 units (8.8%). Belo Horizonte, Rio de Janeiro, and Curitiba completed the list of major cities. The Southeast region concentrated 41.8% of sales, followed by the Northeast with 21.7% and the South with 17.5%.
