The Natural Investment Lab has developed a standardized contract template to facilitate financing for reforestation and forest conservation projects in the global carbon market.

Securing financial resources for reforestation and preservation initiatives still faces significant structural barriers in Brazil and worldwide.

To unlock this bottleneck, the Natural Investment Lab (NIL) has presented a model contract proposal focused on simplifying private capital access for developers.

The initiative seeks to standardize agreements for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) projects, boosting the maturity of this sustainable market.

Standardization to Unlock Investments

The new format covers so-called offtake contracts, ensuring clear commercial terms even before the effective production of environmental assets begins.

The legal structure addresses critical points such as pricing, financial guarantees, delivery timelines, and the governance of the entire credit lifecycle.

The central objective is to elevate carbon to the level of a global commodity, offering greater legal certainty for large corporate buyers, such as technology companies like Microsoft.

Market Dialogue and Sector Support

During the document’s development, NIL consulted 25 major financial institutions and companies in the sector, including Itaú BBA, Petrobras, Systemica, Regia Capital, and Regreen.

According to project leadership, standardization will strengthen developers’ ability to structure their proposals.

Project leadership stated:

“The idea is to prepare the developers of carbon production projects so they can handle all the demands they will encounter when trying to access resources.”

The expectation is to serve both established companies in the segment, such as Mombak and Re.Green, and new ventures starting their operations in locations like the state of Roraima, with ZEG Florestal.

Global Consolidation by COP31

Originally presented during New York Climate Week, the contract draft will soon be submitted to a public hearing stage to receive contributions.

The group’s goal is to finalize the definitive version by the end of this year and highlight the model during COP31, scheduled to take place in Turkey.

The result of an collaboration between Banco do Brasil, Instituto Itaúsa, Instituto Clima e Sociedade (iCS), and Gfanz, managed by Climate Venture, the initiative seeks to boost investments in the Nature-Based Solutions economy.
