The use of deepfake technology to manipulate statements by Leandro Grass in the Federal District prompts authorities to take action and triggers strict legal measures against electoral disinformation.
The electoral campaign in the Federal District is facing a new challenge with the rise of disinformation practices driven by artificial intelligence.
The candidate for state government representing the DF do Povo coalition, Leandro Grass (PT), formally filed a complaint this Thursday (15) with the Cybercrimes Repression Police Station (DRCC) after becoming the target of a fraudulent montage using his image and voice.
The material, distributed via WhatsApp, combines excerpts of authentic speeches with synthetic audio insertions, creating false content that attributes non-existent statements to the politician regarding civic-military schools and his own legal status.
The maneuver attempts to confuse the electorate, forcing a swift response from regulatory bodies and specialized courts.
Electoral Court intervenes against the fraud
Given the severity of the manipulation, the candidate’s defense team appealed to the Regional Electoral Court of the Federal District (TRE-DF).
Auxiliary judge Carlos Alberto Martins Filho granted a preliminary injunction prohibiting the continued distribution of the video, setting a daily fine of BRL 5,000 in case of non-compliance with the court order.
In addition to the cautionary measure, the court ordered the lifting of data confidentiality with the carrier Claro to identify the author of the dissemination.
The Electoral Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPE) was also notified to monitor the progress of the investigations into the authorship of the technological fraud.
“The use of artificial intelligence tools to alter candidates’ voices and create false narratives represents a direct violation of the Superior Electoral Court‘s resolutions, causing a harmful impact on the democratic process by misleading voters.”
Combating fake news and the future outlook
This episode reinforces growing concerns regarding the integrity of the electoral process.
With the police report and the favorable injunction, Leandro Grass‘s team aims to curb the impact of the false material in the final stretch of the race.
The expectation is that the rigorous action of the judiciary will serve as a deterrent against further attempts at image manipulation through deepfakes.
The case remains under review by the competent authorities.
Moving forward, the investigation will focus on the origin of the applied technology and the criminal liability of those involved, establishing a precedent for how the local legal system will handle digital disinformation crimes in upcoming stages of the election.
