New electrical infrastructure: R$ 8.9 billion auction aims to expand transmission grid and boost renewable energy.
Brazil’s energy sector is preparing for a significant milestone with the upcoming Transmission Auction No. 4/2026, scheduled for October 30th by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL). The tender promises to inject up to R$ 8.9 billion into the modernization and expansion of transmission infrastructure, essential for channeling clean energy production. Eight project lots will be offered across seven states, totaling 1,866 kilometers of new lines and increased transformation capacity.
This initiative is seen as crucial to keep pace with the rapid growth of solar and wind power plants in the country. Transmission infrastructure, though less visible to the end consumer, acts as the backbone of the electrical system, connecting generation areas to consumption centers. The absence of a robust grid can lead to bottlenecks, resulting in energy losses and limitations in integrating new renewable sources, a problem known as “curtailment.”
The undertakings, with construction periods ranging from 42 to 60 months, are expected to create approximately 20,312 direct jobs. Investments will be directed towards projects in states including Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraíba, Paraná, Rondônia, and São Paulo. The largest lot, valued at R$ 4.1 billion, will focus on installations in Goiás, Paraná, and Mato Grosso do Sul, including the construction of new substations and control equipment to optimize energy flow.
While the direct impact on consumer electricity bills will not be immediate, the expansion of the transmission grid is a fundamental step towards ensuring the reliability and efficiency of electricity supply. A stronger infrastructure allows for the integration of cheaper and cleaner generation sources, contributing to the system’s long-term sustainability.
ANEEL’s decision to hold this auction reflects strategic planning to anticipate future sector demands. Public consultation and review by the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) were important steps in validating the tender, which incorporated various industry contributions.
