The federal government is preparing an R$ 8.9 billion injection into new transmission lines, aimed at modernizing the national power grid and ensuring the efficient flow of renewable energy produced in the country.

Brazil’s electrical infrastructure is set for a major expansion phase with a new transmission auction scheduled by ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency) for October 30th.

The auction, classified as Auction No. 4/2026, involves the contracting of projects totaling nearly R$ 9 billion in investments, covering eight distinct lots strategically distributed across seven Brazilian states.

The ambitious project includes the construction of 1,866 kilometers of new energy transmission lines, as well as the installation of vital substations to increase the system’s transformation capacity.

According to official estimates, the execution of these works is expected to create more than 20,000 direct jobs, with completion deadlines ranging from three and a half to five years.

Strategic Infrastructure for the Energy Sector

Despite the size of the investment, experts warn that the impact of these projects is not expected to be felt immediately in Brazilians’ electricity bills.

The core objective is structural: ensuring that electricity generated from clean sources—such as solar farms and wind complexes, which are growing exponentially in remote regions—can safely reach major consumption centers.

Regarding the relevance of this expansion, industry experts highlight:

Transmission acts as the backbone of the electrical system. Without strengthening these corridors, the country risks wasting the potential of modern power plants due to a lack of transmission capacity, limiting the efficiency of our energy matrix.

Connecting Generation to Consumption

The auction lots cover the states of Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraíba, Paraná, Rondônia, and São Paulo.

The largest single project, valued at R$ 4.1 billion, will focus on critical installations between Paraná, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Goiás.

Expanding this network is essential to mitigate the problem of curtailment—a technical term used to describe the waste of generated clean energy that cannot be transmitted due to grid limitations or a lack of immediate demand.

While strengthening the grid alone will not resolve the issue of tariff volatility, it is a key piece in increasing system reliability.

By reducing physical bottlenecks, the country makes its grid more resilient, allowing for more fluid integration between different energy sources and improving voltage control across the entire territory.

Next Steps and Looking to the Future

Following the bidding process at the B3 exchange, the winning companies must begin the schedule for environmental licensing, engineering, and equipment installation.

The complexity of these projects reinforces the need for long-term planning, given that constructing transmission lines is a slow and costly process that must always precede actual energy demand.

This auction reinforces the trend that, for both investors and consumers, the energy transition depends not only on new power plants but on a smart and robust grid.

The success of these investments will serve as a barometer for Brazil’s ability to sustain its industrial and residential growth with energy that is increasingly sustainable and less susceptible to interruptions.
