Casa dos Ventos has obtained a new authorization from the MME to export interruptible energy to Argentina and Uruguay, reinforcing Brazil’s role in regional energy integration.

Brazil’s renewable energy sector is gaining fresh momentum following a recent green light from the federal government. Casa dos Ventos Comercializadora de Energia received approval from the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) to expand its electricity export operations to Argentina and Uruguay, consolidating a strategy that began in 2023.

The measure was formalized through an ordinance published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) on Thursday, October 8. The order from the Secretariat for Energy Transition and Planning authorizes the company to transfer power from the National Interconnected System (SIN) to neighboring countries, under strict security and economic efficiency conditions.

Commitment to the National Interconnected System

The regulator was emphatic in establishing safeguards for the domestic market. According to the text, any export operation must not jeopardize the stability of the SIN, whose monitoring criteria are defined by the National Power System Operator (ONS).

In addition to physical grid security, the regulation dictates that selling surplus power abroad must not increase electricity sector costs for Brazilian consumers. The focus is on allowing the transmission of interruptible energy without placing a burden on the national generation fleet.

“Export flexibility serves as a gauge of the maturity of Brazil’s clean energy market, enabling renewable supply to meet regional demand without compromising domestic supply.”

Rules and Next Steps

To put the operation into practice, especially regarding Uruguay, the company will need specific authorizations to use the frequency converter stations located in Rivera and Melo. Compliance with contractual transmission rules is a mandatory step before any energy flows.

Casa dos Ventos now has ten business days from official publication to apply for membership with the Electric Energy Trading Chamber (CCEE). In addition, the company must report monthly to the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel), detailing the volume traded, the origin of generation, and the identity of international buyers.

Although the regulatory act does not define exact quotas or mention specific contracts, the decision paves the way for Casa dos Ventos to optimize the use of its robust renewable matrix. The move reflects the country’s growing interest in positioning itself as a key player in sustainable energy exports in Latin America, taking advantage of the region’s hydrological and wind complementarity.
