The Palato supermarket chain is expanding its sustainability strategy through a partnership with GreenYellow, investing R$ 13 million in energy efficiency for new greenfield units in Northeast Brazil.

Retail chain Palato has just consolidated a new step toward operational sustainability. Through a strategic partnership with GreenYellow, the company will implement high-efficiency projects in two new greenfield units—planned and built from scratch—located in Recife (Pernambuco) and Alagoas. With a total investment of R$ 13 million, the initiative aims to optimize energy consumption right from the structural phase of the establishments.

At the heart of the project is the so-called “Retail Kit,” a set of technological solutions from GreenYellow focused on optimizing lighting, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. This measure is essential, considering that—according to surveys by Way2 Technology and the Brazilian Society for Retail and Consumption (SBVC)—these systems account for up to 40% of all electricity spending in supermarkets.

UaaS model facilitates energy transition

The partnership stands out for its use of the Utility as a Service (UaaS) model. Through this approach, GreenYellow fully assumes the initial investment, installation, and operation of clean energy technologies. As a result, Palato avoids immediate capital outlays, converting what would be a high fixed investment (CAPEX) into a variable operating expense (OPEX).

“The model makes it possible to transform investments that would otherwise be made as CAPEX into operating expenses (OPEX), while also tying the contract to the performance of the implemented solutions.”

Continuity and commitment to efficiency

This new expansion is a direct continuation of a collaboration that is already delivering practical results for the chain. In May of this year, a unit in Maceió (Alagoas) pioneered the adoption of this format, serving as a model for the new implementations. The focus now is to scale resource savings and energy efficiency, ensuring that future stores operate with the lowest possible environmental impact.

With this move, Palato reinforces its commitment to sustainability, aligning with global ESG trends in the retail sector. The success of the partnership with GreenYellow points to a future where technology not only reduces operating costs but also positions supermarket chains as active agents in the transition toward a more efficient and conscious economy in Northeast Brazil.
