An extratropical cyclone in Rio Grande do Sul downed six Taesa towers, mobilizing teams to restore power by October 7.
Clean energy and transmission infrastructure in southern Brazil faced a severe test following the passage of a powerful extratropical cyclone. The extreme weather event caused significant damage to essential assets operated by Taesa in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul.
The impact directly hit the 230 kV transmission line connecting Livramento 3 to Alegrete 2. With destructive winds intensified by El Niño effects, the system suffered a forced outage in the early hours of September 28.
Focused effort on line recovery
The company mobilized more than 90 specialists, along with heavy machinery, to access critical points in the municipalities of Alegrete and Santana do Livramento. Waterlogged terrain and damaged roads present major barriers to the progress of engineering work.
To overcome the damage swiftly, the transmission company deployed temporary structures capable of restoring full operational capacity to the system. Official forecasts indicate full normalization of the affected section by October 7.
The company stated that it has been stepping up meteorological monitoring and its contingency response plan in light of the increasing frequency and intensity of severe weather events.
Regulatory treatment and future resilience
Given the severity and exceptional nature of the storm forecasted by Inmet, the company reached out to regulatory authorities. A formal request was sent to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Aneel, and ONS to classify the incident as an act of God or force majeure.
The measure seeks to protect the concessionaire from financial penalties, requesting exemption from the variable portion related to unavailability. The episode reinforces the urgency of adapting energy transmission infrastructure to growing global climate volatility.
