Google has secured a 22-year nuclear power purchase agreement in Finland, ensuring the continued operation of the Loviisa power plant through 2050 and strengthening regional technology infrastructure.

In a strategic move that reinforces the commitment of major tech companies to reliable baseload power, Google and the Finnish energy firm Fortum have announced a highly significant long-term contract.

The power purchase agreement (PPA) spans 22 years and focuses primarily on the Loviisa nuclear power plant, a vital component of Finland‘s electricity supply.

The partnership not only meets the growing electricity demand of the big tech company’s regional data centers but also serves as a financial safeguard for Fortum.

The purchase commitment provides the revenue predictability required for the operator to carry out an investment plan of approximately 1 billion euros, which is essential to keep the plant operational through 2050.

Energy Security and Expansion

The Loviisa plant, which accounts for 10% of all electricity generated in the country, was at risk of ceasing operations after 2030 without this investment.

Under the contract, Google will begin purchasing 50% of the plant’s capacity starting in 2030, extending the partnership until 2049.

Beyond ensuring the facility’s longevity, the agreement includes technical upgrades, such as turbine optimization that will add 38 MW of installed capacity, along with an additional 10 MW expansion.

Beyond Nuclear: Renewables and Batteries

The relationship between the two giants extends beyond nuclear power. The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore new renewable energy sources and grid flexibility systems.

One of the first results of this collaboration will be the installation of a 94 MW battery energy storage system, strategically located near Google‘s data center in Kajaani.

This initiative is part of a larger Google investment plan in Finland, which is expected to reach 13 billion euros between 2027 and 2028.

The strategy focuses on the development of data centers and supporting infrastructure in cities such as Hamina, Muhos, and Vaala.

In the long term, the alliance between Google and Fortum sets a model for the sector. By aligning the need for stable, clean energy from tech giants with the modernization of critical assets, the Finnish market is positioning itself as one of the most resilient hubs for data infrastructure in Europe, preparing the groundwork for the next era of artificial intelligence with solid and predictable energy support.
