The partnership between YOU.ON Energia and HyperStrong aims to lead the supply of large-scale battery systems in capacity reserve auctions scheduled for December.

The Brazilian electricity sector is reaching an inflection point with the impending entry of large-scale storage technologies. To integrate this new reality into the national energy matrix, Brazilian company YOU.ON Energia has formalized a strategic alliance with Chinese giant HyperStrong.

The immediate focus is to ensure competitiveness in the December 2026 auctions, which are essential to supporting the expansion of solar and wind power in the country.

The collaboration combines the Brazilian company’s local engineering and integration expertise with HyperStrong‘s extensive industrial track record, which already totals over 70 GWh of installed capacity globally. This strategic move comes at a time when renewable intermittency requires flexibility solutions to ensure the stability of the National Interconnected System (SIN).

The Strategy Behind Battery Energy Storage (BESS)

The operation will be technically divided: the Chinese manufacturer will supply the battery energy storage systems (known by the acronym BESS), while YOU.ON Energia takes responsibility for engineering, integration, technical support, and local assistance.

The proposal is to deliver pre-tested equipment to reduce operational risks and accelerate the implementation of winning auction projects.

Industry analysts highlight the synergy between the two companies:

Combining China’s industrial scale with Brazilian cutting-edge engineering is the path to enabling robust projects capable of tackling the climate and demand challenges Brazil currently faces.

The Race for ANEEL’s Auctions

The energy market eagerly awaits the two capacity reserve auctions scheduled for December. The first auction, set for December 2, will feature specific local content requirements, while the second, on December 4, will be open to international solutions.

Projects with a minimum capacity of 30 MW and a four-hour discharge duration will be eligible, with contracts expected to last 15 years starting in 2028.

The race is intense: the Energy Research Office (EPE) registered a record 6,091 registered projects, totaling nearly 300 GW of potential capacity. Although this figure reflects only initial interest, it underscores the importance of storage as a pillar of Brazil’s energy security, reducing the need to dispatch emergency thermal power plants.

The Local Content Challenge

Despite the enthusiasm, meeting BNDES requirements represents a critical obstacle. To obtain the coveted Finame code, which facilitates project financing, companies must demonstrate real production processes on Brazilian soil.

Although YOU.ON already holds accreditation, HyperStrong has not yet announced the construction of a local manufacturing plant, making the local content strategy one of the partnership’s most sensitive aspects.

YOU.ON Energia, however, boasts the advantage of practical experience, having participated in the pioneer battery project at the Registro substation in São Paulo for ISA Energia Brasil. This successful track record operating 30 MW and 60 MWh of storage qualifies the company to tackle the integration challenges that will come with commercial scale in the coming years.

Outlook and the Future

The impact of the partnership will be measured by the results of the December auctions. If successful, the deal will not only facilitate the entry of Chinese technology into Brazil, but also set a new standard for flexibility in the national electrical grid.

As the country advances toward an increasingly clean energy mix, batteries transition from a futuristic promise to an essential strategic asset for the energy transition.
