Adecoagro has signed an agreement to sell the historic Monte Alegre mill in Minas Gerais, seeking to concentrate its sugarcane and clean energy production in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.
The strategy to consolidate its position in the bioenergy market has entered a new chapter following Adecoagro‘s recent move.
The company has formalized the sale of the Monte Alegre unit, located in the municipality of Monte Belo, Minas Gerais, to Pioneer Participações Societárias, a company tied to an investment fund managed by Milenio Capital.
This move marks a major shift in the corporation’s operational footprint, as it intends to direct all of its sugarcane and bioenergy efforts to the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.
Founded in the mid-20th century, the plant in Minas Gerais holds significant historical value for the group, having been Adecoagro‘s very first asset acquired in the Brazilian bioenergy sector back in 2005.
Over the decades, the facility evolved beyond traditional sugar and ethanol manufacturing by incorporating modern sustainability practices.
In 2009, the plant took a major step toward the energy transition by launching electricity cogeneration from burning sugarcane bagasse biomass, cementing its role in the renewable energy matrix.
Strategic Transition and Regional Focus
The decision to divest from the Minas Gerais asset aligns with the company’s expansion in Mato Grosso do Sul.
The corporation recently acquired a third production unit previously owned by Raízen, strengthening its operational scale in the Midwest region.
As a result, management chose to streamline its geographic footprint, concentrating biofuel manufacturing and clean energy generation across its three plants in Mato Grosso do Sul.
For the buyer, the acquisition marks its debut in the bioenergy segment.
The transaction was communicated internally to employees, though the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed to the market.
Sources close to the transaction indicate:
The completion of the sale remains subject to regulatory and contractual conditions, with the final closing expected later this year.
While the bureaucratic procedures move forward, factory management remains under Adecoagro‘s responsibility.
The definitive transfer of operational control to Pioneer Participações Societárias will only take place after regulatory approval and the full fulfillment of the requirements agreed upon by both parties.
The completion of this transaction symbolizes the end of an important cycle for Adecoagro in Minas Gerais, paving the way for a leaner and more focused operation.
Industry expectations are that concentrating activities in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul will bring even greater efficiency to the company’s renewable energy generation and agricultural production in the coming years.
