Soaring oil prices drive global interest in clean hydrogen

Global oil price volatility has accelerated strategic investments in clean hydrogen, which is now viewed not only as a decarbonization solution but as a vital pillar of global energy security.

Geopolitical instability and the subsequent surge in fossil fuel costs have forced governments worldwide to re-evaluate their energy portfolios. In a quest for independence and predictability, nations are prioritizing the development of clean hydrogen. Despite facing competitiveness challenges compared to traditional fuels, the urgency to reduce reliance on external supplies has placed this technology at the center of the agenda for powers such as the European Union, Japan, and South Korea.

According to François Jackow, CEO of Air Liquide, the shock in oil and gas prices, exacerbated by recent conflicts, resulted in an unexpected loss of over $100 billion for importing countries. This alarming scenario has elevated the status of hydrogen from an eco-friendly alternative to a tool for economic sovereignty. For the executive, the cost of enabling this ecosystem is negligible when compared to the financial losses caused by dependence on volatile fuels.

Energy security and the role of hydrogen

The transition to more resilient sources is currently the primary driver for the advancement of alternative energy projects. According to a report by the Hydrogen Council, approximately $130 billion has already been allocated to the sector, with the vast majority of these projects in advanced stages of execution. Experts agree that renewable hydrogen acts as a stabilizing element, capable of better integrating wind, solar, and nuclear power generation with industrial demand.

“Hydrogen is not only a way to decarbonize but also a fundamental element for ensuring energy security. The few billion needed to truly accelerate the hydrogen ecosystem seem small compared to the total cost whenever a crisis occurs.”

Industrial challenges and global competitiveness

While the fuel’s potential is vast, the transition faces technical and financial obstacles. Green hydrogen, although the most sustainable alternative, still requires significant investments in infrastructure. However, its application is considered indispensable for hard-to-abate sectors, such as heavy transport and industrial refining. South Korea, for example, is already exploring the use of this fuel to modernize its public transport fleet, signaling a concrete shift in the practical application of the technology.

A point of concern for Western markets is China’s leadership in the sector. With a significant share of the planned global capacity, the Asian nation risks dominating the hydrogen supply chain, much like it did with the electric vehicle market. François Jackow warns that to avoid technological dependence, Europe and other powers must accelerate their domestic projects and diversify their supply routes.

The future of the clean energy sector will depend on the speed with which these nations can overcome cost bottlenecks and implement robust infrastructure. In a world of geopolitical uncertainties, investment in hydrogen is no longer just an environmental goal, but a strategy for economic survival and national resilience in the face of severe fluctuations in the fossil fuel market.
