SPIC Brasil boosts renewable generation with a multi-billion investment in hydropower.

SPIC Brasil has taken a significant step toward strengthening the nation’s energy matrix by announcing a substantial investment of R$ 1.4 billion. These funds are earmarked for the expansion of the São Simão Hydroelectric Power Plant, strategically located on the border between the states of Minas Gerais and Goiás.

Through this initiative, the plant’s generation capacity will be increased by 310 megawatts (MW). The expansion was made possible by the São Simão HPP’s qualification in the 2026 Capacity Reserve Auction (LRCAP), where it committed to offering 253.3 MW of power.

Strategic Partnership for Generation Expansion

This project was solidified through the signing of a contract with a consortium formed by the Dongfang Electric Corporation and the China Gezhouba Group Corporation (CGGC). These companies were selected through a rigorous competitive process to lead the engineering, manufacturing, and assembly of the plant’s seventh generating unit.

Adriana Waltrick, CEO of SPIC Brasil, highlighted the importance of the investment:

This is a fundamental milestone that embodies our commitment to expanding power generation in Brazil. Optimizing existing assets, such as the São Simão HPP, is the most efficient and sustainable way to increase the country’s reliable, renewable energy capacity.

Dongfang’s expertise will be focused on detailed engineering, while CGGC will be responsible for assembly services at the construction site. The established project timeline anticipates that the new generating unit will enter commercial operation in 2030.

Ricardo Shang, CEO of CGGC Brazil, emphasized his team’s commitment:

We are mobilizing highly qualified teams to ensure the installation of this new generating unit follows the highest standards of safety and efficiency, fully complying with the project schedule while working in complete synergy with SPIC Brasil and Dongfang.

This investment by SPIC Brasil not only increases the supply of clean, renewable energy in the country but also reinforces confidence in the potential of the Brazilian electricity sector and demonstrates a continuous pursuit of sustainable, large-scale energy solutions.
