The Bom Jardim Photovoltaic Plant, operated by Qair, has installed an advanced intelligent perimeter protection system. Spanning 16 km, the project uses fiber‑optic cables and sensors to monitor energy assets against intrusions and theft.

The expansion of solar power plants in Brazil brings a critical challenge: securing assets spread across vast, remote areas. With infrastructure composed of inverters, transformers, and photovoltaic panels exposed to the environment, the risk of theft and damage poses a real threat to operational continuity.

In this context, protection moves beyond mere asset safeguarding to become a cornerstone of the energy transition.

To mitigate these risks at the Bom Jardim Plant in Icó, Ceará, Avantia – Technology and Security, in partnership with A\SENSE Perimeter Defense, implemented a cutting‑edge intelligence solution.

The project, covering 16 km of perimeter, marks a significant step forward in securing large Centralized Generation assets, integrating physical detection with automated visual monitoring systems.

Fiber‑optic technology as a sentinel

Unlike conventional systems that suffer from false alarms caused by dust, vegetation, or animals, the chosen solution turns a fiber‑optic cable into a distributed sensor.

Across the entire perimeter of the solar plant, the cable captures vibrations and physical disturbances. Advanced algorithms process these signals in real time, distinguishing genuine intrusion attempts—such as cuts or climbs—from natural interferences like wind or passing vehicles.

Mário Tranche, commercial director of Avantia, stated:

“In a facility spanning several kilometers, simply adding more equipment isn’t enough. You must understand the risks, how the environment affects operations, and how different technologies can work together to deliver actionable information to those who need to act.”

Integration and Rapid Response

The project’s key advantage lies in the connectivity between systems. When the fiber‑optic sensor detects a threat, the alert is instantly sent to the video management system (VMS).

PTZ cameras are automatically directed to the exact point of the incident, allowing the SOC (Security Operations Center) team to validate the risk before any mobilization.

Mário Tranche highlighted:

“When technology can pinpoint the incident location and direct video monitoring, the team gains speed in verification and better conditions to assess risk before making a decision. It’s the integration of systems that moves us from passive monitoring to intelligence‑driven action.”

Operational Sustainability and Cost Reduction

Beyond efficiency, the architecture adopted at Usina Bom Jardim prioritizes durability and low maintenance. As a passive solution, the fiber cable requires no electrical power along the perimeter.

This makes the system immune to lightning strikes and electromagnetic interference. That feature is essential for reducing technical failures in remote areas and extending the infrastructure’s lifespan.

Hamilton Luiz, CEO of A\SENSE, noted:

“When we talk about energy assets, perimeter defense must be evaluated within the framework of operational continuity. An incident can mean equipment loss, team mobilization, interruption, and reduced availability. Therefore, the value of the technology also lies in identifying the event early and directing the response with precision.”

The Future of Security in Solar Power Plants

The successful implementation at the 240‑megawatt unit of Qair demonstrates that security in solar parks should be treated as an integral part of project engineering.

By combining cutting‑edge national technology with Avantia’s integration expertise, the solution not only protects the investment from financial losses but also ensures that clean energy production continues uninterrupted.

The case in Icó sets a new benchmark for the sector. In a future where the security of critical infrastructure increasingly demands automation, the ability to convert perimeter data into operational intelligence will be the key differentiator for companies leading the country’s sustainable energy mix.
