Petrobras has confirmed a new oil discovery in ultra-deep waters in the Amazon Mouth basin, expanding exploratory potential off the coast of Amapá.

The exploration of new energy frontiers along the Brazilian coast has entered a new chapter with the advancement of operations led by Petrobras. The state-owned company identified a second oil occurrence in block FZA-M-59, located in the Amazon Mouth at an impressive maritime depth that challenges offshore engineering and stirs the oil and gas sector.

The find occurred during ongoing work at the well named Morpho, situated in ultra-deep waters off the coast of Amapá. This new phase focused primarily on investigating deeper geological layers, broadening the technical horizons of the exploratory campaign in the region.

New data in the exploratory frontier

The confirmation of hydrocarbons came through detailed wireline log analysis, along with the verification of rock shows and fluid sampling directly at the site. This set of evidence reinforces the complexity and richness of the petroleum system present in the Amazon Mouth Sedimentary Basin.

Although exact volumes have not yet been measured, the company emphasizes that future laboratory work will determine the precise economic potential of the area.

Assessments are still ongoing and further information will be released in due course, keeping the market and society informed on the progress of research in the region.

Next steps and energy transition

As drilling at the Morpho well moves toward final completion, Petrobras technicians are evaluating the identified rock formations. Operational rigor has been a hallmark of these activities, which balance the need for reserve replacement with strict socio-environmental requirements.

The search for new reserves along the equatorial margin is part of the oil company’s long-term planning to ensure national energy security. Even with the global growth of clean energy sources, the demand for hydrocarbons continues to require robust exploration strategies for the coming decades.
