The confirmation of a second reservoir at the Morfo well, at the mouth of the Amazon, raises Petrobras’ expectations regarding the potential of the Brazilian Equatorial Margin for the energy sector.
Petrobras has confirmed a strategic advancement in its exploratory activities at the mouth of the Amazon. The identification of a second oil layer at the Morfo well, situated at a greater depth than initially detected in August, strengthens the state-owned company’s thesis regarding the region’s geological potential.
The company’s CEO, Magda Chambriard, classified the discovery as a significant, albeit cautious, step. According to the executive, the finding adds value to the company’s portfolio in the area, but the economic viability of the project depends on rigorous steps to determine volume and productivity.
The challenge of viability and scale
Despite optimism regarding the presence of good-quality oil, the state-owned company emphasizes that exploratory success must be accompanied by a volume that justifies the robustness of the required investments. Exploration in ultra-deep waters requires complex, high-cost infrastructure.
“Even with good-quality oil, the reservoir must be large enough to generate revenue capable of paying for the investments needed for its production,” pondered the state-owned company’s CEO, comparing the scenario to the need to differentiate large-scale assets from smaller ones.
Petrobras already holds licenses to drill three other appraisal wells in the same block. The mobilization of the rig for these complementary activities is scheduled for early 2027, at which point the company will have clarity on the actual size of the discovered reserve.
Impact on the exploratory frontier
The opening of the Equatorial Margin is viewed by the market as a key piece to ensure the long-term sustainability of national oil production, especially considering the natural decline horizon of the Pre-Salt fields.
For Petrobras‘ executive board, the technical confirmation reinforces the thesis that Brazil remains one of the most promising destinations for global energy capital. The expectation is that, with more data, new partners will feel attracted to join the region’s exploration ecosystem, boosting regional development and the country’s energy security.
Operations at the Morfo well continue at a steady pace, with the demobilization of the drilling rig scheduled for late October. Afterward, the equipment will be moved to the Mãe de Ouro prospect in Rio Grande do Norte, continuing the company’s exploration schedule.
