Financial markets reacted cautiously on Wednesday (09), pressured by geopolitical escalation in the Middle East and a surge in oil prices, which reached their highest level since July.

The international uncertainty scenario dominated business on Wednesday, leading the Ibovespa to close the trading session with a 0.93% depreciation, settling at 185,629.04 points.

Risk aversion was the main driver of the session, fueled by escalating tensions in the Middle East, which directly impacted the global energy supply chain.

Concurrently, the foreign exchange market reflected a move towards safe-haven assets. The spot dollar closed the day up 0.52%, quoted at R$ 5.1123, a direct result of investors seeking safer assets amid the macroeconomic instability.

Oil’s Impact on Inflation

The surge in energy commodity prices was the main event of the day. A barrel of Brent crude surpassed the symbolic mark of $101, with November contracts closing up 3.36% at $101.21.

WTI, the benchmark in the United States, also followed the upward trend, advancing 3.25% and closing at $96.05.

This continuous price increase, which marks seven consecutive days of gains, brings back an old market fear: global inflationary pressure.

The concern is that with higher energy costs, central banks may maintain interest rates at restrictive levels for a prolonged period.

The escalation of conflicts involving the United States, Iran, and regional groups has created a perfect storm, forcing an asset repricing on Wall Street and causing major financial centers around the globe to decline.

International Scenario and Next Steps

The mood on Wall Street was pessimistic, exacerbated by the rise in yields of Treasuries – U.S. government bonds – to historic levels.

The combination of higher capital costs and uncertainty over fuel supply keeps investors on high alert.

The future of negotiations now depends on diplomatic and military developments in the producing region.

For the Brazilian market, the focus remains on the influence of oil prices on domestic inflation and the conduct of monetary policy, which may be forced to respond if the external shock proves persistent in the coming weeks.
