AXIA Energia ensures readiness at Northeastern hydroelectric plants to restore power following blackouts.
The ability to autonomously restore electricity supply, even in the event of a total blackout, was recently validated by AXIA Energia. The company successfully concluded its annual cycle of Black Start tests at four strategically important hydroelectric power plants in the Northeast region: Xingó, Paulo Afonso IV, Luiz Gonzaga, and Sobradinho.
These procedures are critical to the country’s energy security. They ensure that, in the event of a widespread failure in the National Interconnected System (SIN), these plants can begin power generation without relying on external sources. In doing so, they serve as the starting point for the gradual re-energization of the grid.
Rigorous Simulations Follow ONS Protocols
The tests conducted by AXIA Energia strictly adhered to protocols established by the National Electric System Operator (ONS). The simulations covered everything from emergency diesel generators and battery banks to sophisticated digital control systems and communication infrastructure.
A critical factor evaluated was the response time of operation and maintenance teams. The agility of these crews is a deciding factor in minimizing the duration of potential power supply interruptions and, consequently, reducing economic losses.
“Black Start drills play a strategic role in the country’s energy security. Ensuring that our major power plants are ready to overcome systemic interference quickly and effectively is the path to maintaining stability and avoiding greater economic and social impacts during critical moments.”
Reinforced Resilience for the Northeast Subsystem
The successful conclusion of these tests reaffirms the reliability of a significant portion of the generation capacity installed along the São Francisco River. In scenarios of instability within the SIN, the readiness of these units is what allows for a faster restoration of the electrical grid.
Although the actual deployment of these schemes is a rare event, the periodic execution of these trials is a fundamental regulatory requirement. It attests to the robustness of the generation assets in the face of challenges such as extreme weather events, substation failures, or multiple transmission contingencies. The AXIA Energia plants thus consolidate their role as pillars of security and stability for power supply in the Northeast.
