ABEEólica has released a manifesto demanding presidential commitments to reduce renewable energy waste in Brazil, aiming to halt the multi-billion dollar losses caused by power curtailment.
The wind energy sector in Brazil has reached a pivotal moment. ABEEólica recently introduced the agenda “Winds to Transform Brazil,” a strategic document establishing fundamental guidelines for the next four years.
The central point of the demand is the requirement that candidates for the Presidency of the Republic sign a formal commitment to create a National Plan aimed at mitigating curtailment, the forced reduction of power generation from renewable sources due to grid constraints.
The initiative emerges in a scenario where the waste of clean energy has become a critical bottleneck. According to the manifesto, current infrastructure suffers from delays in transmission projects and limited operational flexibility in the National Interconnected System (SIN).
This ultimately limits the expansion potential of renewable energy and compromises the financial sustainability of existing projects.
A framework for combating energy waste
To address this challenge, ABEEólica proposes a strategy structured on three essential pillars: full transparency in diagnosing the causes of curtailment, the establishment of objective technical criteria for classifying these restrictions, and, above all, the creation of annual targets that can be audited by the market and society.
A commitment to clear goals is the only way to ensure that Brazil’s energy transition is not interrupted by logistical inefficiencies that could be avoided with proper planning and political will.
Beyond directly combating curtailment, the association’s document points toward the modernization of the electricity sector. Among the long-term recommendations are the strengthening of the EPE (Energy Research Office) and the maturation of the regulatory framework for energy storage technologies.
It also proposes redoubled efforts to attract investments for data centers and to develop the country’s green hydrogen production chain.
The cost of the renewable blackout
The figures presented by the entity reveal the urgency of the issue. Recent data from the ONS (National Electric System Operator) show that dispatch restrictions for wind and solar sources jumped by 21% between January and August 2026.
This volume, which reached 4.12 GW in average losses, brings immediate economic concern: the financial impact could exceed R$ 8 billion, a loss that falls upon the national electricity ecosystem.
ABEEólica’s pressure seeks to transform this scenario, ensuring that Brazil’s energy potential is fully utilized. The expectation is that by placing the topic at the heart of the electoral debate, the next government will prioritize investments in transmission and system modernization.
