WEG will equip 54 Carrefour stores with solar technology to generate 56 GWh/year.
The expansion of solar energy in the retail sector reaches a new and significant milestone through the partnership between GreenYellow and Carrefour Brasil. The initiative, which relies on the technological expertise of WEG, aims to equip 54 of the group’s locations with photovoltaic systems totaling approximately 38 MWp of installed capacity.
This ambitious project promises not only to reduce reliance on the traditional power grid but also to reinforce Carrefour‘s commitment to its sustainability and decarbonization goals. Clean energy generation will take place directly at the consumption points, optimizing the use of the electricity produced.
Distributed Generation at the Heart of Retail
The adopted model, known as behind-the-meter, ensures that the generated solar energy is consumed directly by the stores, utilizing a zero-grid concept that prevents excess power from being sent back to the utility grid. The project is expected to produce roughly 56 GWh annually, meeting an average of over 30% of the energy needs of the participating stores.
Choosing WEG as a technology partner reinforces confidence in its capability to supply infrastructure and innovation for photovoltaic systems. GreenYellow, in turn, will lead the project’s execution, demonstrating the strength of collaboration between renewable energy experts and major retail players.
“This project demonstrates how the on-site solar generation model can scale up within the Brazilian retail sector. The partnership with WEG combines renewable energy expertise, technology, and execution capabilities to deliver an efficient solution aligned with Carrefour’s decarbonization goals.”
Focus on Sustainability and Innovation
The implementation of these photovoltaic systems is estimated to prevent the emission of more than 2,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. This figure highlights the positive environmental impact of the energy transition driven by this initiative.
“WEG is committed to developing solutions that promote energy efficiency and support companies on their decarbonization journey. This initiative demonstrates how technology, innovation, and partnership are essential to accelerating the energy transition.”
Global Reach Partnership
It is worth noting that the collaboration between GreenYellow and Carrefour is not limited to Brazil. In France, a similar agreement already provides for the installation of photovoltaic systems across approximately 350 parking lots, with an estimated annual generation of 450 GWh.
In the Brazilian market, this 38 MWp project solidifies the strategy for large-scale solar adoption in the commercial sector, combining cutting-edge technology with local energy consumption—a significant step toward a more sustainable and economically viable future.
