Rising US Treasury yields, driven by US inflation, pressure the Ibovespa and push the dollar higher, sparking caution across global financial markets.

Economic instability has once again set the pace for global financial markets this Wednesday. Yields on US Treasury bonds, known as Treasuries, climbed again after consumer inflation data came in higher than expected, signaling that the Federal Reserve (Fed) may maintain restrictive monetary policies for longer than initially anticipated.

This shift in external sentiment directly impacted the Brazilian Stock Exchange. The Ibovespa, the primary barometer of the national market, ended the day lower, pressured both by the macroeconomic backdrop and profit-taking following a week of strong gains. Meanwhile, the US dollar reacted to the instability, closing the trading session higher at R$ 5.02.

Pressure and detachment from moving averages

The behavior of Brazilian assets has drawn the attention of technical analysts. The recent stock market rally increased the divergence of several stocks from their 200-day moving average (MA200), a crucial indicator for measuring long-term trends. Recent data indicates that a significant portion of listed stocks were trading well above this level, pointing to a potential overextension in prices.

According to Luca Girardi, an investment analyst at Nomad:

Beyond external factors, the market performance was weighed down by profit-taking after the strong gains accumulated over the previous week.

Uncertainty and the energy market

The impact of Treasuries is global, as they serve as a risk benchmark for the entire world. When these bond yields rise, opportunity costs increase, forcing investors to demand higher returns to keep capital in emerging markets or riskier assets, such as the energy sector.

In the commodities market, oil is also facing a tense moment. Futures contracts closed higher, driven by insecurity regarding global supply amid conflicts in the Middle East. Logistical instability, aggravated by incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, keeps the price of oil at high levels, adding an extra layer of volatility for energy companies that rely on this pricing to report their earnings.

Looking at the domestic future, economists like Alexandre Espírito Santo, from Way Investimentos, warn of an economic slowdown in Brazil starting in 2027. The combination of lower household consumption and an adverse international environment suggests a challenging period ahead, reinforcing the need for caution among investors seeking stability in a market marked by heightened volatility.
