The Brasília Blood Bank has reopened its doors, urging donors to help replenish its blood supply following the holiday break.
The routine of solidarity resumed at the GSH Brasília Blood Bank this Tuesday (13th), with a direct appeal to the public to replenish stocks of all blood types. The recess coinciding with the October 12 national holiday impacted the usual flow of donors, a recurring scenario that requires special attention to prevent shortages.
The institution’s regional outreach team emphasizes the importance of regular donations. A continuous supply of platelets and red blood cells is vital for maintaining healthcare services across the Federal District, ensuring that patients requiring transfusions receive the necessary support.
Post-Holiday Call to Action
While the blood bank’s closure during the holiday is understandable given changes in city routines and holiday travel, it created a gap in the supply of blood units. The institution has reopened with the goal of meeting this demand, using the post-holiday period to intensify outreach and make it easier for volunteers to contribute.
Hours and Location: Making Donation Accessible
For those wishing to contribute, the GSH Blood Bank operates Monday through Saturday, in the morning from 7:00 AM to 12:30 PM. The facility is located at SGAS 915, in Asa Sul, and offers free parking for eligible donors to remove barriers and encourage participation.
Essential Donor Criteria
The act of donating blood follows strict criteria to ensure the safety of both the donor and the recipient. It is essential that volunteers be in good health and weigh over 110 lbs (50 kg). Presenting an official photo ID and CPF (Brazilian individual taxpayer registry) in good condition is mandatory. Digital documents are only accepted through their official applications.
“Consistent donations are essential to prevent shortages of platelets and red blood cells in the Federal District.”
The age range for donation is generally between 16 and 69 years old. Youth aged 16 and 17 may donate with legal authorization, while donors over 70 may continue to donate if they meet specific requirements and obtain medical clearance.
Restrictions and Important Precautions
Certain precautions are essential before donating. Avoiding alcohol for the 12 hours preceding the donation is crucial. Donating on an empty stomach is not recommended; a light meal and hydration are important. After procedures such as tattoos, piercings, or cosmetic interventions, there are waiting periods that vary depending on the type of procedure and its safety protocols.
Resuming donations has a direct impact on public health in the Federal District. Each volunteer’s participation is a significant step toward ensuring that hospitals and clinics have the necessary supplies to save lives, reinforcing the importance of ongoing solidarity.
