Grunner is investing R$ 19.5 million in agricultural machinery powered by ethanol and biomethane, offering sugar mills energy autonomy and reduced diesel costs.

The energy transition in the agricultural sector has gained new momentum with an announcement from farm machinery manufacturer Grunner. During the Grunner Day 2026 event, the company unveiled a robust financial investment aimed at developing sustainable solutions and strengthening clean energy within the sugarcane industry.

The primary goal of this initiative is to enable sugarcane mills to use the biofuels generated in their own operations to fuel their fleets. This strategy promises to mitigate the historical reliance on diesel, reducing both operating expenses and the carbon footprint in the fields.

Financial investment and new technologies

Of the total R$ 19.5 million invested in the project, the largest share—R$ 15.5 million—was directed exclusively toward the engineering of new energy matrices. Another R$ 4 million was applied to the development of a robust new chassis, specifically designed to withstand the rigors of heavy agricultural work.

To enable engines powered by ethanol and biomethane, the company established a strategic partnership with MWM. The engines will power the ATR transshipment lines, ASP vinasse spreaders, and ADS solid distribution units, ensuring high performance without the use of traditional fossil fuels.

Partnerships and conversion solutions

In addition to the alliance with MWM, the manufacturer has maintained its collaboration with Mercedes-Benz. This synergy ensures the continued supply of the base platform and the transition to a chassis architecture designed specifically for agribusiness.

Considering the existing fleet in the country, the company has also prepared a retrofit option. This process allows for the conversion of diesel engines to run on ethanol, although this mechanical modification is not applicable to biomethane-powered models.

Our mission is to transform the energy matrix of sugar mills by delivering durability, autonomy, and maximum efficiency through the use of biofuels produced right on the farm.

With these innovations, the company envisions a scenario where the sugarcane sector can close the production cycle with complete independence from fossil fuels. These new machines represent a definitive step toward the decarbonization of modern agriculture, combining advanced technology, maintenance savings, and environmental responsibility.
