Lynas Rare Earths is making a heavy investment in Brazil by acquiring the Caldeira project for over half a billion dollars, boosting the energy transition supply chain.

Australian giant Lynas Rare Earths has reached a strategic agreement to take full control of the promising Caldeira project, located in the municipality of Caldas, Minas Gerais.

The transaction, carried out with fellow Australian company Meteoric Resources, marks a turning point in the domestic mining sector and promises to inject more than $500 million in financial contributions to develop the initiative focused on essential inputs for clean energy.

The move comes at a strategic time for the country, shortly after the enactment of the new National Policy for Critical and Strategic Minerals.

The recent legislation established the National Council for the Industrialization of Critical and Strategic Minerals, a federal body that now has the power to oversee and approve corporate transactions involving assets vital to the green economy and global technological security.

The strategic weight of Minas Gerais in the energy transition

Located in the southern region of Minas Gerais, the venture houses one of the world’s largest reserves of rare earth oxides outside of China, with significant deposits in ionic clays.

The site holds substantial volumes of neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, and terbium—components that are indispensable for manufacturing high-performance magnets used in electric vehicles and wind energy turbines.

With this corporate acquisition, Lynas Rare Earths substantially expands its global base of mineral resources and reserves.

In addition, the agreement provides for substantial interim financial support to maintain the pace of local operations while the deal undergoes regulatory and governmental reviews.

Expectations and the future of the green industry

The Ministry of Mines and Energy endorsed the transaction as a fundamental step for the country to move beyond its role as a mere exporter of raw materials.

The goal is to encourage more advanced stages of industrial processing domestically, adding economic and technological value to the sustainable production chain.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy stated:

This announcement is a major milestone and a game-changer in the history of Brazilian mining, taking a significant step forward in advancing the different stages of production chains, such as processing.

The multinational’s arrival in Minas Gerais signals an important test for Brazil’s new regulatory framework.

The next steps will involve detailed analyses of the feasibility of implementing advanced industrial stages in the country, aligning corporate expansion goals with government guidelines for sustainability and technological development.
