Strategic Expansion of Weg in Itajaí Boosts Energy Transition with New Battery Factory.
Industrial giant Weg announced Friday (September 25) a significant expansion of its battery energy storage systems (BESS) factory project in Itajaí, Santa Catarina.
The total investment for this new unit has been revised to R$ 330 million, with the plant expected to achieve an annual production capacity of 4 GWh.
Operations at the new factory are scheduled to begin in the second half of 2027. This update to the original project, first announced in February, reflects a commitment to incorporating advanced automation technologies and industrial efficiency optimizations.
These improvements aim not only to boost production capacity but also to position Weg at the forefront of the energy storage sector.
The decision to expand the investment coincides with a crucial time for the renewable energy and storage market. The company expresses optimism about the sector’s future, particularly with the upcoming first National Storage Capacity Reserve Auction, anticipated for December 2026.
This auction is seen as a catalyst for the expansion of the domestic BESS market.
