The 4th ANEEL Transmission Auction secured $8.9 billion in investments, easing grid bottlenecks and projecting a $20.7 billion savings on electricity bills.

The recent outcome of the 4th Electric Power Transmission Auction, organized by the National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL), ensured the full allocation of the planned investments. The auction sold all eight lots offered in the market.

The initiative will inject $8.9 billion of private capital into the national energy infrastructure. Additionally, it is expected to boost the labor market with the creation of roughly 20,000 jobs.

According to the Brazilian Association of Electric Power Companies (ABCE), the success of the bidding will have direct effects on the operational security of the National Interconnected System (SIN).

Operational efficiency and expansion of the energy grid

The project package includes the construction of 1,866 kilometers of new transmission lines. The plan also covers the management of existing segments and a substantial addition of capacity at substations.

The physical expansion aims to relieve severe constraints on the flow of clean sources such as wind and solar. The measure is seen as essential to curb the waste generated by curtailment at power plants.

ABCE’s CEO, Alexei Vivan, highlighted the technical importance of the new projects for the country’s supply stability.

“Expanding transmission infrastructure increases the energy flow capacity, strengthens the security and reliability of the National Interconnected System, and helps reduce curtailment situations associated with reliability constraints and external unavailability.”

Record discount and impact on the electricity bill

One of the central points of the auction was the intense competition that resulted in an average discount of 50.10%. The discount applies to the Annual Permitted Revenue (RAP) set by the regulatory body.

This tariff reduction is expected to translate into a significant savings of $20.7 billion for end consumers. The financial relief will be felt over the 30-year contracts.

The entity’s statement emphasized that the presence of large industrial groups ensures robustness and credibility in meeting the scheduled timelines.

“A discount of this magnitude demonstrates the competitiveness of the process and has economic relevance for society as a whole. It is also positive to note that the lots were won by traditional groups with experience and recognized technical capacity.”

Upcoming Challenges and Environmental Licensing

With the bidding phase completed, the priority for the concessionaires shifts to overcoming bureaucratic bottlenecks. The focus is on obtaining environmental licensing and securing project financing.

The alignment between transportation infrastructure and the demand of major urban centers will remain vital for Brazil’s energy transition.

Strengthening the basic grid reaffirms transmission as a strategic vector to ensure continuous electricity supply and sustain the country’s economic progress.
