The safety of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine, is getting a temporary reprieve. A targeted ceasefire has been established between Russia and Ukraine, mediated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), allowing teams to begin crucial repairs. The measure aims to restore external power supply to the plant, which has been operating on emergency generators since mid-August, essential for cooling the reactors.
The situation at the plant, under the control of Russian forces since the beginning of the conflict, has been a cause of significant international concern. The lack of external power raises an alarm for a potential complete blackout, intensifying the need for swift action. He highlighted that the restoration of the Ferosplavna line, while important, does not fully guarantee the return of external power supply. Likhachev also mentioned previous repair attempts on another power line that did not progress due to alleged inaction by the Ukrainian side, claims that Kyiv has not commented on.
The instability at Zaporizhzhia reflects the widespread tension of the conflict, where both sides accuse each other of endangering nuclear safety.
