The demand for solar energy in Brazil is being redefined, shifting significantly toward BESS and microgrids. Strategic sectors are seeking energy autonomy, driving innovative storage solutions.

The solar energy landscape in Brazil is undergoing a significant reconfiguration, as evidenced by discussions and interactions at the latest Intersolar. A clear shift in demand is being observed, moving away from traditional grid-tied photovoltaic systems to prioritize more robust and autonomous solutions.

The most relevant aspect of this transformation is the growing demand for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and microgrids. This shift reflects a pressing need to ensure the continuity of electricity supply, especially in a scenario where grid reliability faces challenges and strategic sectors require uninterrupted operations.

The Era of Energy Autonomy

The market for control and energy storage equipment recorded a notable growth of 26% in the first half of 2026, signaling the consolidation of this new trend. Sectors such as agribusiness, manufacturing, critical infrastructure, telecommunications, and hospitals are the primary drivers of this expansion.

This evolution represents a profound conceptual change. Energy storage is no longer viewed merely as a backup for emergencies, but as an essential pillar in infrastructure planning and corporate capital expenditure (Capex), aimed at active management and operational resilience.

Better Prepared Consumers and Specific Demands

Grid instability has led consumers and integrators to seek solutions that go beyond simple generation. They now prioritize the ability to keep power available, increase autonomy, and exert greater control over their energy consumption.

Edimar Prumucena, national manager at Victron Energy, stated:

What we noticed at Intersolar was that the customer arrives much better prepared. They aren’t looking just for a piece of equipment or a photovoltaic system. They want to know how to keep power available when the grid fails, how to increase their autonomy, and how to have more control over consumption.

For the off-grid segment, demand is particularly strong in rural areas and remote communities, where extending the conventional grid is economically or technically unfeasible.

This niche has stimulated strategic partnerships, such as the alliance between WEG and Victron Energy, which offers complete off-grid kits—including modules, inverters, controllers, and batteries—standardizing the supply of isolated systems and ensuring supply reliability.

The Rise of Microgrids and Technology Choices

In the industrial and large-scale sectors, modular microgrids are gaining ground across the country. With scalability of up to 400 kW, these independent architectures (Power Banks) are interconnected and managed by software, allowing for maintenance without total operational shutdowns.

Regarding battery technology, Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) is consolidating as the preferred choice for commercial and industrial projects in Brazil. Falling global lithium costs and the longevity (cycle life) of LFP are decisive factors for this adoption.

Investment analysis, according to experts, should focus on the full lifecycle of the asset, where the efficiency and durability of LFP stand out, offering an attractive return over time for the Brazilian energy sector.

The pivot of the solar energy market in Brazil toward BESS and microgrids reflects a growing maturity and a pursuit of more resilient and autonomous energy solutions.

This trend not only strengthens the country’s energy security but also drives innovation and sustainability across various productive sectors.

The future outlook points to an increasing integration of intelligent storage solutions, consolidating Brazil as a leader in clean energy and decentralized systems, with LFP technology playing a fundamental role in this transition.
