In anticipation of the upcoming solar eclipse, which will occur this Wednesday, August 12, energy provider Octopus Energy has launched a pioneering initiative: offering its customers one hour of free electricity.
The condition to enjoy this bonus is simple: reduce energy consumption during the period when the phenomenon will affect solar generation.
The measure aims to mitigate the impacts of decreased solar energy production, which is expected as the Moon blocks sunlight. Octopus Energy has asked its customers to avoid using high-consumption appliances, such as washing machines and dishwashers, between 6 PM and 8 PM local time.
This mass collaboration is crucial for maintaining the stability of the power grid during fluctuations in renewable energy generation.
Understanding the Eclipse’s Impact on Solar Generation
The solar eclipse, which will cover up to 95% of the Sun in some areas of the United Kingdom, poses a challenge for the energy sector. The temporary interruption of large-scale solar photovoltaic generation can result in a significant drop in electricity supply.
It is estimated that across Europe, solar energy production could be reduced by up to 9.7 GW. In the United Kingdom, this reduction could range between 700 MW and 1.3 GW.
Spain, in particular, anticipates a loss of up to 5 GW in its solar generation, as reported by the Spanish electricity system operator.
The rapid variation in solar energy supply requires power system operators and companies in the sector to be on high alert. The challenge is to balance the grid during the drop in photovoltaic generation and then manage the gradual return to normal solar energy production after the eclipse ends.
While the phenomenon will be total in some regions of the Northern Hemisphere, such as Greenland, Iceland, and Spain, in the United Kingdom the eclipse will be seen partially.

Those who sign up for the company’s rewards program and choose to shift their appliance usage to times less affected by the eclipse will be eligible to receive one hour of cost-free electricity the following weekend.
