Rock in Rio Raises the Bar for Festival Sustainability, Planning to Neutralize 50,000 Tons of CO₂ and Incorporating Public Transport Carbon Footprint into Its Innovative Actions.
The renowned Rock in Rio, one of the world’s largest music festivals, announces a significant expansion of its environmental initiatives. This edition, the event aims for a holistic approach to carbon emission neutralization, reaching far beyond the confines of the Cidade do Rock (City of Rock). The goal is to fully offset the environmental impact generated, including emissions from each attendee’s journey, from their homes to the festival grounds and back.
In a strategic partnership with Axia Energia, Rock in Rio projects to neutralize an impressive 50,000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO₂). To put this commitment into perspective, this amount is equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 18,800 fossil fuel-powered motor vehicles in Brazil, underscoring the ambition and expected positive impact on the environment and the green economy.
Reforestation and CO₂ Offset
A significant portion of this carbon offset will come from planting 15,000 tree seedlings. It is estimated that these trees, as they grow, will absorb about 6,328 tons of CO₂ from the atmosphere. The choice of species reflects an artistic connection: mahogany, grenadillo, and brazilwood are among the donated seedlings, trees traditionally valued in the manufacture of musical instruments such as acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and pianos.
Renewable Energy and Blockchain Innovation
The majority of the CO₂ neutralization, approximately 43,672 tons, will be achieved through carbon credits linked to clean energy generation. These credits originate from the Teles Pires Hydroelectric Plant, a renewable energy project located between the states of Pará and Mato Grosso. Furthermore, the music festival will ensure that all electricity consumption within the Cidade do Rock is offset by the issuance of about 4,000 Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), totaling 4,000 MWh. These certificates, utilizing advanced blockchain technology, offer full transparency, allowing for the tracking of the origin and environmental attributes of the energy consumed, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability and responsibility.
Mapping Sustainable Mobility
Another innovation for this edition is the detailed mapping of carbon emissions resulting from the travel of all involved parties. Attendees, suppliers, and event staff will be invited to provide data on their journeys to the Cidade do Rock. Throughout the festival’s seven days, a dedicated team will collect this information through questionnaires. Afterward, these data will be compiled and validated, enabling a precise calculation of the generated impact and ensuring that sustainable mobility emissions are also duly compensated.
