Rising food prices are once again squeezing Brazilian households, with significant impacts on the basic food basket.

The recent survey by the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) in September sounded an alarm for Brazilian homes: inflation is showing signs of strength once again, particularly regarding food at home. The group recorded an expressive variation of 0.96%, serving as the main driver of the overall 0.82% advance in the index.

This escalation in the prices of essential items is attributed to a combination of factors, including adverse weather events that affected crops and a strategic reduction in the planting area for certain crops. The direct result is the rising cost of products that make up families’ daily lives.

The list of culprits and a few reprieves

At the top of the list of concerning increases, tomatoes stood out with an impressive surge of 37.76%. Potatoes also felt the weight of production conditions, with a 24.07% hike. Onions were not far behind, accumulating a 10.14% increase, while rice recorded a 4.56% rise in its value.

However, it is not all bad news. Amid this challenging environment, cuts of chicken showed a downward trajectory. Whole chicken fell by 1.96%, and chicken parts saw a 1.41% reduction, establishing themselves as a more economical alternative in the face of beef prices.

Forecasts and strategies to navigate inflation

Market projections indicate a potential slowdown in potato and carrot prices next month, which would provide temporary relief. However, experts warn that weather conditions may continue to exert pressure on other vegetables, requiring constant attention.

Given this scenario, the retail sector has sought strategies to mitigate the impact on consumers’ pockets. The recommendation for supermarkets is clear: stricter control of product waste and a more conscious adjustment of profit margins.

Economist and supermarket management specialist Leandro Rosadas commented:

Increased rainfall and the consolidation of El Niño starting in November could bring losses forward.

Efficient inventory management and the pursuit of product diversification are seen as crucial tools to soften the full pass-through of inflation to the final consumer.

The persistence of high food prices reiterates the importance of effective agricultural policies and retail strategies that prioritize accessibility, especially in an economic context that demands caution and adaptation from all links in the productive chain and consumers alike.
