Petrobras secures long-term LNG supply with a U.S. company, aiming for supply stability and security.
Petrobras has taken a significant step to reinforce its natural gas supply strategy by signing a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) purchase and sale agreement with Sempra Infrastructure, a renowned energy company from the United States. The 20-year partnership includes the acquisition of 0.8 million tons of LNG annually.
The fuel will be supplied from the Port Arthur LNG liquefaction terminal in Texas. The Brazilian state-owned company’s decision aims to reduce its dependence on the volatile spot market, strengthening risk management associated with its natural gas portfolio. With this contract, Petrobras enhances its ability to meet commitments more securely and flexibly.
Expansion of the Port Arthur LNG project
The Port Arthur LNG Phase 2 project, responsible for liquefaction, is under construction and, once completed, will double the complex’s installed capacity to approximately 26 million tons per year. The first units of this project are expected to begin operations starting in 2027.
Justin Bird, CEO of Sempra Infrastructure, celebrated the agreement:
This is a strategic milestone and an important step in expanding the company’s LNG business, meeting growing global demand.
In a separate statement, Petrobras also announced it received R$ 2.57 billion related to installments from the Economic Subsidy Program for diesel sales. With these transfers, the total amount received by the company in subsidy programs for diesel, gasoline, and LPG now exceeds R$ 9.5 billion.
