Petrobras signs a long-term contract with Cheniere Energy for the supply of LNG, aiming to ensure greater energy stability and reduce dependence on the international spot market.

Petrobras has consolidated an important strategic move for Brazilian national energy security by formalizing a 22-year contract for the purchase of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from the United States. The deal, closed with Cheniere Marketing, a subsidiary of energy giant Cheniere Energy, represents the Brazilian state-owned company’s second major move in the sector in less than 30 days.

LNG is natural gas subjected to an extreme cooling process, which reduces its volume by 600 times and facilitates global maritime transport, eliminating physical reliance on pipelines. This operation reinforces the company’s role in supplying fundamental inputs for thermoelectric power plants, industries, and residential consumption throughout Brazil.

Shielding Against Market Volatility

The contracted volume provides for the supply of 800,000 metric tons of fuel annually. The transaction is seen as a key pillar for Petrobras‘ risk management strategy, which seeks to protect itself from sudden price fluctuations common in the so-called spot market—the trading environment for immediate delivery, which is usually highly sensitive to geopolitical crises and weather variations.

The contract strengthens the risk management of the natural gas portfolio and expands flexibility and security to fulfill the company’s contracts.

Impacts on Energy Infrastructure

For the state-owned enterprise, maintaining long-term contracts is an efficient way to ensure cost predictability and supply stability. With natural gas playing a crucial role as a transition energy source and industrial raw material, guaranteeing a steady and predictable supply from the US positions Brazil more resiliently against global energy challenges.

This new commercial commitment signals that Petrobras will continue to invest in strategic international partnerships to optimize its supply logistics. The focus remains on diversifying import sources and ensuring that the Brazilian domestic market, which is increasingly dependent on this source, has the momentum to maintain its productive activities at steady levels over the coming decades.
