Petrobras secures natural gas supply with a multibillion-dollar, 22-year contract with U.S.-based Cheniere Energy.
In a strategic move to mitigate risks associated with international energy market volatility, Petrobras has formalized a long-term agreement for the purchase of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). The Brazilian state-owned company’s partner in this operation is Cheniere Marketing, LLC, the commercial arm of U.S. giant Cheniere Energy.
The contract stipulates an annual supply of 0.8 million tonnes of LNG (mtpa) over the next two decades. In practice, the initiative secures approximately 1.1 billion cubic meters of gas per year for the Brazilian company, ensuring greater stability in meeting its contractual obligations in the domestic market.
Strategy against market volatility
The global energy sector has faced constant challenges regarding price fluctuations and the availability of immediate spot market cargoes. By securing a long-term supply, Petrobras reduces its dependence on such sudden shifts, protecting its portfolio against unforeseen events that could affect operational costs and security of supply.
Securing long-term volumes strengthens the management of natural gas portfolio risks and increases the company’s flexibility to fulfill its contracts.
This transaction is seen as an essential step toward balancing the oil company’s various supply sources. With this increased predictability, the state-run firm reinforces its capacity to meet national demand, even in the face of geopolitical and economic uncertainties that impact energy commodities.
Partnership with a global leader
Cheniere Energy has established itself as a strategic partner for Petrobras due to its size and infrastructure. The company is a pillar of the United States export market, operating critical liquefaction facilities in Sabine Pass, Louisiana, and Corpus Christi, Texas.
With an operational capacity of 56 mtpa, Cheniere offers the robustness necessary for Petrobras to maintain its long-term strategy. The formalization of this agreement not only brings operational security to the Brazilian company but also cements a direct connection with one of the world’s largest energy production hubs, ensuring greater resilience for the national energy matrix in the years to come.
