Petrobras’s leadership reaffirms Brazil’s alignment with global sustainability objectives, emphasizing the importance of a balanced energy transition.
Petrobras President Magda Chambriard stated this Monday (Sep. 21, 2026) that Brazil is in sync with the goals established by the Paris Agreement. The statement was made during ROG.e 2026, an important energy congress held in Rio de Janeiro, organized by the IBP (Brazilian Institute of Oil, Gas, and Biofuels). The declaration reinforces the country’s commitment to decarbonization and the pursuit of a cleaner energy future.
The Paris Agreement, a global landmark in the fight against climate change, stipulates that Brazil must achieve emission neutrality by 2050. Furthermore, the country has committed to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, with a target of at least 59% by 2035, compared to 2005 levels. Chambriard‘s statement underscores the seriousness with which Brazil addresses these environmental challenges.
A Fair and Sustainable Energy Transition
The Petrobras executive emphasized that the energy transition must be implemented in a way that does not harm economic development and energy supply. She noted that nations with high human development tend to consume more energy per capita, while Brazil still presents consumption 30% lower than the global average. This demonstrates the need for careful planning adapted to the Brazilian reality.

For us, the energy transition needs to be fair; it needs to be affordable for our society. This doesn’t mean abandoning sources but rather decarbonizing the economy without losing reliability, economic stability, and universal access to energy.
This vision points to a clean energy model that is economically viable and socially inclusive.
Investments in Diversification and Innovation
Magda Chambriard advocated for continued investments in oil and gas, serving as a financial pillar for the expansion of low-carbon sources. Petrobras has already directed resources towards areas such as synthetic fuels, biofuels, low-carbon hydrogen, energy storage, and carbon capture technologies.
The future energy scenario presents significant challenges. Projections indicate that, by 2050, the Brazilian economy could grow by 80%, demanding a 50% to 55% increase in energy consumption. Petrobras, which currently supplies one-third of the country’s primary energy, intends to maintain this share, demonstrating the company’s strategic importance in the national energy matrix.
Equatorial Margin Exploration: A Link in the Energy Chain
In line with the strategy to ensure long-term energy supply, Chambriard reiterated the importance of oil exploration in the Equatorial Margin. This region is seen as crucial for replenishing Brazilian reserves, which, according to EPE projections, could experience a considerable reduction by 2035.
Exploration in the Foz do Amazonas Basin, in the so-called Equatorial Margin, has yielded promising discoveries, such as the Morpho well. However, expansion in this area faces opposition from environmentalists due to the fragility of local ecosystems. The discussion reflects the delicate balance between the need for energy supply and environmental protection.
