Oil giant Petrobras expresses doubts about the economic viability of certain renewable energy projects, but reaffirms its commitment to expanding its energy matrix by 2030.
Despite recognizing the growing importance of renewable sources for Brazil’s energy future, Petrobras is signaling caution regarding the profitability of specific projects. The company’s CEO, Magda Chambriard, emphasized that some ventures do not yet present the financial return necessary to justify investment, weighing the cost to society and shareholders.
This careful evaluation, however, does not compromise Petrobras‘s expansion plans in the sector. The goal of reaching 1.7 gigawatts (GW) of renewable generation capacity by 2030, an integral part of the 2026-2030 Business Plan, remains firm. The company considers this volume of investment to be economically feasible.
Investing in Innovation for a Renewable Future
To make clean energy projects more financially attractive, Petrobras is heavily betting on research and development (R&D). The company’s R&D center, Cenpes, will be a key player in this strategy. Company management draws a parallel with the success achieved in pre-salt exploration.
At that time, the pre-salt also faced skepticism regarding its economic viability. However, through investment in technology and innovation, exploration became one of Petrobras‘s financial pillars. The expectation is that a similar rationale will apply to the development of renewable energies.
Long-Term Vision and Energy Diversification
Looking toward the 2050 horizon, Petrobras plans to maintain its significant share in Brazil’s primary energy generation, accounting for about one-third of the total. The strategy to mitigate the natural decline in fossil fuel production involves exploring new frontiers and already discovered areas.
Complementing this expansion in oil and gas, renewable sources and biofuels will gain ground. It is estimated that these alternatives will represent between 8% and 10% of Petrobras‘s share in the national energy matrix by the middle of this century, consolidating a more diversified and sustainable energy portfolio.
Petrobras‘s stance reflects a pragmatic movement in the energy sector, where economic sustainability is a determining factor for the viability of new technologies and projects. The bet on R&D suggests that the company seeks not only to meet targets, but also to innovate in order to lead the energy transition in a profitable and secure manner.
