The federal government has deployed the National Force to protect the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant against sabotage risks during the electoral period and presidential transition.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy recommended the immediate dispatch of federal agents to secure the infrastructure of the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant, located in the state of Pará.

The preventive measure seeks to shield the energy sector against potential acts of vandalism and sabotage.

This strategic mobilization comes at a sensitive time encompassing the electoral calendar and discussions surrounding the renewal of operating concessions.

Consequently, the ministry requested overt support to ensure stability in the country’s electricity supply.

Strategy for Energy Security

The deployment of the National Public Security Force was authorized for an initial period of ninety days.

The joint operation will run from October through the end of January, covering the entire presidential transition and inauguration process.

The request came from the concessionaire Norte Energia, which is responsible for managing the facility.

The company expressed concern regarding the physical integrity of the installations and the operational continuity of the hydroelectric complex.

Licensing and Environmental Debates

While physical security is being reinforced, the plant continues to operate under legal backing following the expiration of its original license, issued by Ibama in 2015.

The current debate involves complex technical requirements, such as the review of the hydrograph for the Volta Grande do Xingu region.

The concessionaire highlighted that operations at the hydroelectric plant are proceeding without interruption, regularly contributing to the National Interconnected System.

The measure takes place within the scope of ongoing dialogue between the company, the Ministry of Mines and Energy, state authorities, and the Ministry of Justice, reflecting the strategic importance of the enterprise. The focus of the action is to support state and federal forces in preserving public order and the integrity of people and property.

Next Steps in the Region

The teams will work in an integrated manner with state police forces and under the coordination of the Federal Police.

The logistical planning aims to anticipate risk scenarios and protect one of the most relevant assets for the national energy matrix.

The Federal Government reinforced that it will continue to closely monitor all critical facilities in the electric sector to prevent shortages and guarantee public order in strategic areas.
