The opening of the energy market allows millions of Brazilian consumers to freely choose their suppliers, transforming contract management with a focus on consumption profiles, seasonality, and new pricing dynamics.

The expansion of the free energy market in Brazil is redefining the relationship between consumers and suppliers. With the entry of new customer profiles into the contracting environment, the power sector is preparing for a structural shift that goes beyond simple cost reduction, demanding a deeper understanding of electricity consumption.

This movement is driven by the desire for greater autonomy and the pursuit of energy efficiency. In the first quarter of 2026, more than 4,800 consumer units migrated to the free market, with 70% of them using the simplified model designed to ensure greater agility and automation in the transition to energy sustainability.

Customization and new contractual challenges

The entry of smaller consumers poses a clear challenge for trading companies: the need to develop customized offerings. Unlike large industries, new entrants have varied profiles, where variables such as peak demand hours, seasonality, and load shaping play a prominent role in structuring energy contracts.

For Alexandre Becker, Special Projects Coordinator at Ludfor, pricing will undergo a significant change, especially for low-voltage consumers. According to the expert:

“The product for low-voltage (LV) consumers tends to be different from the current product in the free market (ACL) for medium and high voltage (MV/HV). Today, there is already a need for pricing, both in the regulated market (ACR) and the free market, based on hourly prices—something this class is not yet used to. Therefore, load shaping and seasonality will be key features to be observed by retailers intending to serve this audience.”

Beyond price: the importance of strategy

For consumers, the final bill amount will be just one of the pillars of analysis. Comparing offers now requires evaluating charges, grid use tariffs, taxes, and contractual flexibility. Aspects such as terms, contracted volume, and loyalty rules become crucial differentiators. Furthermore, the financial strength and risk management capacity of the chosen supplier serve as fundamental guarantees for those seeking predictability in the power sector.

This growing autonomy goes hand in hand with the expansion of distributed generation, which has already allowed Brazilian consumers to take on a more active role. With the freedom to choose a supplier, this participation expands into the realm of negotiations, making access to information an indispensable tool for a successful migration.

Information and the future of energy freedom

CCEE (Electric Energy Trading Chamber) is preparing tools, such as comparison platforms, to guide these new market entrants. However, experts warn that the purchasing decision must be strategic. As Alexandre Becker points out:

“CCEE is expected to provide a price comparison platform and information on traders. What will be necessary to compare among offers to prevent consumers from choosing solely based on the lowest price?”

Ultimately, the market opening points to a future where data intelligence will dictate the rules. For consumers, understanding their own consumption profile will be the decisive differentiator to enjoy the benefits of clean energy and contracting freedom, ensuring not only savings, but also the security of a supply tailored to their real needs.
