The Itaipu Dam is preemptively activating its spillway due to increased rainfall, ensuring reservoir control without impacting energy supply.

Itaipu Binacional initiated a preventive operation at its spillway early Sunday morning, September 13th. The measure was taken in response to a significant increase in the water volume flowing into the reservoir, caused by heavy rains in the region. The primary objective is to maintain control over the dam’s storage level, a crucial component for its safety and operational efficiency.

This action highlights the importance of continuous monitoring of hydrological conditions for the management of large energy projects. The ability to respond quickly to extreme weather events is a key factor in ensuring the stability of the electricity supply, even in scenarios of high rainfall.

Precise Reservoir Management

The water release through the spillway began in a controlled manner, with an initial flow of 1,700 cubic meters per second (m³/s) at 1:50 AM. Shortly after, at 2:43 AM, this volume was increased to 3,100 m³/s. Itaipu‘s projection indicated a peak of up to 3,800 m³/s during the afternoon, with a subsequent gradual reduction throughout the night, depending on inflow behavior.

This maneuver, although resulting in the release of water that will not pass through the turbines for energy generation, is fundamental for reservoir management. It aims to prevent overflow and maintain the level within ideal operational parameters, especially for a dam that, compared to others, has a more limited long-term regulation capacity.

Continuous Energy for Brazil and Paraguay

It is important to emphasize that the spillway operation occurs in parallel with electricity generation. Itaipu Binacional remains fully connected to Brazil’s National Interconnected System (SIN) and Paraguay’s system, ensuring continuous supply to both countries.

The dam operates in accordance with bilateral agreements and energy demands, demonstrating its resilience and adaptability. Rigorous monitoring of rainfall in the incremental basin, the area responsible for directly supplying the reservoir, is a constant practice to optimize operations.

The water release through the spillway also causes temporary changes in the conditions of the Paraná River downstream from the dam. Therefore, careful monitoring of water levels and flows along the affected stretch is essential.

To keep authorities and communities informed, Itaipu publishes its daily Hydrological Bulletin. This document provides updated data on the river’s behavior, serving as an important reference for decision-making in the riverside region.
