Ibovespa closes higher driven by Petrobras, while the financial market awaits the first round of the Brazilian elections and monitors volatility.

The main index of the Brazilian stock exchange ended Thursday’s session in positive territory, supported by the robust performance of Petrobras shares. With investors already positioned in a wait-and-see mode for next weekend’s election, caution set the pace of trading on Faria Lima.

The upward movement reflected the occasional optimism of certain assets, even in the face of a challenging global macroeconomic scenario. The U.S. dollar also posted significant gains against the real, reflecting the search for foreign exchange protection amid the final stretch of the presidential campaign.

Electoral climate dominates trading

The center of attention for the financial market remained focused on the race for the Planalto Palace, driven by the release of new polling data and expectations surrounding the televised debate. Lula da Silva‘s absence from the TV Globo event, replaced by a podcast appearance, stirred up the day’s political debates.

Recent polls point to a scenario of intense polarization between incumbent Lula da Silva and Senator Flávio Bolsonaro. This electoral outlook reinforces projections that the presidential race will likely only be decided in a runoff.

The ballot box barometer and next steps

For analysts in clean energy and other economic sectors, next Sunday’s vote will serve as a crucial credibility test for polling institutes. The vote count will help calibrate corporate expectations regarding the direction of public policies on sustainability and energy transition in the country.

Fernando Siqueira, chief strategist at Eleven Research, stated:

If Lula gets more votes than the roughly 40% indicated in the polls, he will be seen as the clear favorite; if Flávio gets more votes than the roughly 37% to 38% in the polls, he will be the favorite, emphasizing that the post-election period should bring considerable volatility.

Fernando Siqueira‘s assessment sums up the sentiment of caution prevailing among asset managers. With the ballot box barometer validated, the Brazilian capital market is bracing for weeks of intense fluctuation in the pricing of assets linked to infrastructure and the electric power sector.
