EnergyX has finalized a ten-year, multi-billion dollar agreement with Trafigura for lithium supply, bolstering the battery supply chain and the global energy transition.
The global clean energy market has just taken a significant step towards consolidating its supply chain.
Commodities giant Trafigura has inked a long-term commercial pact valued at approximately $2 billion with technology developer EnergyX.
The negotiation includes the total delivery of 100,000 tons of the essential metal used in the manufacturing of battery cells.
This volume will be distributed over a decade, supplying strategic initiatives focused on electric mobility and stationary electricity storage.
Expansion in the United States and South America
The landmark agreement covers two key production hubs managed by EnergyX.
These are the Black Giant project, located in Chile, and the Lonestar project, situated in the U.S. state of Texas.
Under the established terms, the trading company will purchase two-thirds of the initial production from the South American initiative and nearly a third of the projected volume from the Texas site.
The primary objective is to secure raw material of appropriate grade for batteries directly for Western automotive industries.
Technology and Financing for the Future
The Lonestar facility employs advanced direct lithium extraction (DLE) methods, known for optimizing the separation of the element from brines.
This technical innovation has attracted the attention of major industrial conglomerates and global funds.
Backed by companies such as automaker General Motors and multinational energy firm Eni, the American company is leveraging this commercial milestone to unlock new financial investments, including advanced discussions with EXIM Bank.
Teague Egan stated:
Offtake agreements are one of the most critical steps in moving a lithium project from development to production.
With the certainty of sales secured by the partnership with Trafigura, the sector gains predictability in future revenues.
The corporate leadership’s goal is to pave the definitive path for large-scale commercial extraction to reach its full operational capacity by the end of the decade.
