EDP is accelerating its strategic plan in Espírito Santo with a R$ 5 billion investment, focusing on grid resilience against the severe climate impacts expected in the coming months.

EDP has officially moved up its contingency schedule for the 2026/2027 period, a direct response to the warning signs of the El Niño phenomenon in Southeastern Brazil. With a summer expected to bring intense storms and powerful wind gusts, the utility company has reinforced its operational strategy to ensure stable power supply for over 1.8 million consumers across 70 municipalities in the state.

The announcement, made from the company’s state-of-the-art Integrated Operations Center (COI) in Serra, marks a paradigm shift in asset management: moving from a reactive model to a predictive stance. By combining cutting-edge technology with a robust investment plan, the company aims to fortify its distribution infrastructure against the meteorological adversities currently challenging the national Electricity Sector.

Technology and Automation as Grid Shields

The core pillar of this operation is the expansion of self-healing technology, which already covers approximately 80% of the company’s customer base in the state. This system allows the grid to identify faults and execute automatic restoration maneuvers in fractions of a second, minimizing the impact of outages caused by falling trees or lightning strikes.

The efficiency of this electrical network is bolstered by the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), a sophisticated management platform that integrates the monitoring of substations and remote-controlled reclosers. According to the company, the logistics structure is prepared for an immediate increase in readiness, capable of scaling its field workforce by up to seven times in extreme crisis scenarios.

“It is essential for the power sector to adapt its physical infrastructure to the new thermal and rainfall demands caused by extreme climate events such as El Niño.”

Long-Term Investments and Sustainability

This initiative is part of a continuous modernization cycle that earmarks R$ 5 billion for Espírito Santo between 2025 and 2030. In addition to automation, EDP has maintained a rigorous vegetation management plan, having performed over 240,000 prunings in the first eight months of 2026—an essential measure to prevent damage to medium and low-voltage assets.

Looking ahead, the utility reaffirms its commitment to operational resilience. In partnership with agencies such as the Civil Defense and the Fire Department, the company has established absolute priority protocols for essential services, including hospitals and security facilities. With 117 substations under constant monitoring and an exclusive telecommunications network with full coverage, EDP is laying the groundwork to ensure that the Energy Transition and system reliability go hand-in-hand in the face of global climate challenges.
