These events underscore the importance of environmental governance in realizing projects aimed at energy advancement.

Data Centers Under Environmental Scrutiny

A mega **data center**, valued at over **R$ 200 billion**, planned by **Omnia**, part of the **Patria Investimentos** group, in the **Pecém Industrial and Port Complex**, **Ceará**, is under intense scrutiny. The **Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office (MPF)**, in conjunction with the **Public Defender’s Office of the Union (DPU)**, filed a lawsuit to block the start of its operations and power supply. The entities demand prior consultation with the **Anacé indigenous people**, who reside in the area of influence, and the full preparation of an **Environmental Impact Study and Environmental Impact Report (EIA/Rima)**.

The undertaking, associated with **TikTok**, projects a capacity of **300 MW**, relying on **120 diesel generators** and the capture of **groundwater** for cooling – points that raise significant concerns regarding water and emissions impacts. **Omnia** defends the regularity of its licensing with the state environmental secretariat, but the debate reflects a national trend, with similar projects facing resistance in **Pará** and **Amazonas**. Meanwhile, the **digital infrastructure** industry calls for speed in regulating **Redata**, a federal law designed to reduce the burden on investments, but which, according to **Brasscom**’s executive president, **Affonso Nina**, still lacks operationality.

Fracking: The Legal Battle Continues in the STJ

Minister **José Afrânio Vilela**, the rapporteur for the case, requested more time to delve deeper into new considerations and arguments.

The technique, while boosting energy production in countries like the **United States**, **Canada**, and Argentina’s **Vaca Muerta** province, is a source of great controversy in Brazil. States like **Paraná** and **Santa Catarina** have already approved legislation prohibiting **hydraulic fracturing**, and a bill in the Chamber of Deputies, supported by the **Arayara Institute** and the **No Fracking Brazil** coalition, seeks to ban the activity nationwide.

Inpasa’s Mega Ethanol Pipeline Towards the Future of Bioenergy

On the **bioenergy** horizon, **Inpasa**, a giant in **corn ethanol** production, reveals an audacious plan: to invest **R$ 22 billion** in the construction of a **pipeline** complex to optimize **fuel** transport in the country. The project, named **Pascal**, envisions a connection between **Sinop (**MT**)** and **Paulínia (**SP**)**, a 2,100-kilometer route, crucial for the outflow of the growing production from the **Midwest**.

This investment aims to create a dual **infrastructure**: one **pipeline** will transport 13.3 million cubic meters of **corn ethanol** from the **Midwest** to **Paulínia**, the main national distribution hub, with its final destination at the **Port of Santos**. In the reverse direction, a second **pipeline** will carry 6.6 million cubic meters of petroleum derivatives to **Mato Grosso** and **Mato Grosso do Sul**. The project, which has already been submitted to **Ibama** for federal **environmental licensing**, is a milestone for the logistics and competitiveness of **corn ethanol**, which already accounts for almost half of Brazil’s production.

The discussions surrounding **data centers**, the pending deliberation on **fracking** in the **STJ**, and **Inpasa**’s ambitious **Pascal Project** reflect the multiple challenges and opportunities in Brazil’s **energy transition**.
