BNDES moves forward with battery auction by accrediting major national and international players.
The Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) has taken a significant step toward the future of energy storage in Brazil. Seven companies have been approved to supply battery systems under the local content requirement, marking a milestone for the country’s first auction dedicated to this technology.
The list of approved firms includes heavyweights in the sector, such as three major Brazilian companies: WEG, Moura, and You.On. Joining them are four prominent Chinese groups—TBEA, Gotion, Trina, and BYD—which have also received accreditation.
The qualification process is ongoing; BNDES noted that it will continue to accept and review new applications, suggesting that more companies may join the list of qualified suppliers.
This initial approval allows these companies to proceed with the registration of the systems they intend to offer for projects participating in the national segment of the auction.
It is important to note that accreditation is only the first step. Systems must undergo rigorous technical evaluations to verify compliance with the local content requirements stipulated for the Capacity Reserve Auction (LRCAP).
Battery Auction Structure
Brazil’s highly anticipated first battery auction will be structured in two distinct phases. The first, designated as LRCAP 2026 – National Storage, is scheduled for December 2nd.
This phase will be exclusively focused on systems that demonstrate compliance with the nationalization criteria defined by the BNDESCFI system.
Shortly after, on December 4th, the LRCAP 2026 – Storage auction will take place, which will include projects using imported equipment, broadening the scope of the competition.
Both auctions aim to contract power availability for new storage systems connected to the National Interconnected System (SIN), thereby boosting the country’s energy security and efficiency.
