The William Arjona thermal power plant, located in Mato Grosso do Sul, secures definitive authorization from Aneel after signing a long-term natural gas supply contract.
The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) has formalized a significant change for Brazil’s thermal energy sector. The William Arjona power plant, operated by Delta Geração in Campo Grande, has had its commercial operation extended indefinitely. This decision marks the end of a period of uncertainty, during which the unit relied on temporary renewals since 2021.
The plant’s stability, which plays a strategic role in the national system’s security, was consolidated after the presentation of a robust fuel supply contract. The new agreement, signed with Galp Energia Brasil, guarantees natural gas supply until June 2041, directly aligning with the obligations undertaken by the company in the Capacity Reserve Contract (CRCap).
Energy Security and New Horizons
The trajectory of William Arjona gained new momentum after its victory in the 1st Capacity Reserve Auction, held in 2021. Since then, securing a continuous gas supply has been Delta Geração‘s priority. Aneel’s approval came shortly after the validation of the supply contract initiated in August 2025, endorsed by the Monitoring Committee for the Electric Sector (CMSE).

Recovery in the Hydroelectric Sector
In addition to developments in the thermal segment, the electricity sector celebrates the recovery of assets affected by extreme weather events. In Minas Gerais, Cemig obtained the regulatory agency’s green light to resume generating unit UG3 of the Paciência Hydroelectric Power Plant (UHE Paciência), located in Matias Barbosa.
The unit had been shut down due to severe floods that damaged the plant’s infrastructure, including the powerhouse and critical components such as generators and auxiliary systems. With the return of UG3, UHE Paciência completes the reactivation of its main turbines, restoring its full generation capacity after the period of repairs and forced maintenance.
The operational stabilization at William Arjona and the resumption of units in Minas Gerais reinforce the resilience of Brazil’s generation park. For consumers, these movements bring more confidence that the energy supply will be maintained continuously, even in the face of climatic or market challenges.
