Aggreko expands its presence in isolated systems in Amazonas with the acquisition of BBF power plants.

Aggreko has solidified its presence in the isolated systems of Amazonas by announcing the acquisition of six thermal power plants from Brasil Bio Fuels (BBF). With this strategic move, the company now holds 100% control of the Amazonas Generation Consortium (Consórcio Geração Amazonas – CGA), bringing its total to 32 generating units and 149.1 MW of installed capacity in remote areas of the state.

The transaction covers facilities located in strategic points across the state, such as Belém dos Solimões, Tabatinga, Estirão do Equador, Palmeiras do Javari (in Atalaia do Norte), Feijoal (in Benjamin Constant), as well as Envira and Ipixuna. This expansion reinforces Aggreko‘s commitment to ensuring energy supply in hard-to-reach areas where conventional infrastructure is limited.

Expansion of Technological Solutions

The acquisition of the BBF power plants opens new avenues for Aggreko to implement and expand its technological solutions already in use in Amazonas. Highlights include remote monitoring and operations, energy storage systems, and hybridization projects.

These hybridization projects aim to combine thermal generation with renewable sources, such as solar energy and battery systems, to optimize the efficiency and sustainability of the power supply. The goal is to create a more robust energy mix adapted to the region’s specific characteristics.

Core: The Brain of Remote Operations

The expertise gained from the 26 power plants already in its portfolio within the state will allow Aggreko to operate the new units through its proprietary system, known as Core. This control system was developed to monitor the performance of all equipment in real-time, supporting critical operational decision-making.

Aggreko explains:

“Experience with the 26 power plants already part of the project enables the operation of the units through Core, a control system created to monitor equipment performance and support operational decision-making.”

Core provides visibility over operating machinery and fuel consumption, allowing the company to optimize performance without the need for constant travel to these locations.

Logistics and Dedicated Personnel for Isolated Systems

Aggreko‘s operations in isolated systems are a key pillar of its national strategy. In Amazonas, the company employs approximately 250 professionals, including a dedicated team in Manaus, to support power plants scattered across various communities.

Logistics in the region present a unique challenge, involving the transportation of equipment, materials, and teams via Amazonian rivers. This complex operation is complemented by remote monitoring and intervention capabilities provided by the Core system. The acquired generators are scheduled to operate for the next eight years, ensuring energy security for isolated residential areas.

Marco Contin, Managing Director of Aggreko in Brazil, highlights the importance of these operations:

“In isolated systems, there are locations that still require solutions to guarantee energy supply. Aggreko has the expertise to operate in regions where infrastructure and logistics demand a different operational model. This knowledge allows us to pursue more efficient solutions tailored to the needs of each locality.”

With this acquisition, Aggreko not only expands its installed capacity but also strengthens its expertise in providing reliable and innovative energy solutions to meet the challenges of the Amazon, contributing to the socioeconomic development of remote regions.
