The Brazilian automotive market is undergoing an accelerated transformation: electric and plug‑in hybrid vehicles already account for 14.5% of total registrations in the country during the first nine months of 2026.

The mobility landscape in Brazil is witnessing a significant paradigm shift in 2026. Recent data from Anfavea (National Association of Automotive Manufacturers) confirm that fleet electrification has moved beyond a niche to become a substantial portion of national sales.

Between January and September, the Brazilian light vehicle market recorded a total of 2.1 million registered units. Of that total, the share composed of models that rely on the electrical grid for charging—encompassing both fully electric and plug‑in hybrid models—reached an impressive 14.5%.

The remarkable rise of plug‑in models

The survey details that, of the total electrified vehicles connected to the grid, 166.5 thousand units are powered exclusively by batteries. Another 137.2 thousand vehicles are hybrids that also offer the convenience of plug‑in charging.

Additionally, the market absorbed 130.1 thousand conventional hybrids. Unlike the previous models, these use regenerative braking technology and a combustion engine to manage battery charge, consolidating a diversified ecosystem of alternatives to the pure thermal engine.

Comparing cumulative performance in the first three quarters of 2026 with the same period in the previous year, the jump is notable: there was a 154.6% expansion in the registration of grid‑charged vehicles, highlighting a pronounced shift in Brazilian consumer behavior.

Electric mobility is a key highlight of the Decennial Energy Expansion Plan 2036, developed by the Energy Research Company, which estimates that electric mobility consumption will rise from 1 million MWh in 2026 to 15 million MWh in 2036.

Industry leadership and the sector’s future

The leadership in this expansion process features strong names, such as the Chinese BYD. The manufacturer, which completed a year of operation at its plant in Camaçari, in Bahia, reached the milestone of 150 thousand locally produced units, driving impressive registration numbers.

Between January and October 2026, BYD registered 193.2 thousand vehicles registered in the country. The volume represents a staggering 120% growth compared to the same period in 2025, reinforcing the strategy of consolidating domestic production to meet the growing demand.

The impact of this trend projects challenges and opportunities for the country’s energy infrastructure. The forecast from EPE (Empresa de Pesquisa Energética) serves as a compass for the electric sector, which will need to keep pace with a market that, in just a decade, is expected to increase its energy consumption for electric mobility 15-fold. The Brazilian energy transition, therefore, continues to accelerate, shaping the profile of urban traffic for the coming years.
