Natural gas consumption in Brazil surged 15.4% in the first half of 2026, driven mainly by a historic peak in electricity generation and industrial expansion.

The Brazilian pipeline gas market reached a record level of activity during the first six months of 2026. Data released by Abegás show that the daily average hit 57.5 million cubic meters, comfortably surpassing the volume consolidated over the entire previous year.

This significant advance underscores the strategic importance of the fuel for the national energy mix. In addition to supplying factories and homes, the fuel has taken on a central role in ensuring stability for Brazil’s electric grid, which had to intensify the use of power plants.

The jump in electric generation and industry

The main driver of this sharp rise was the demand from thermal power plants, whose supply needs jumped 49% year‑over‑year. The daily volume dedicated to electricity production rose from 11.4 million to 17 million cubic meters, reflecting the need to support the national grid.

At the same time, the manufacturing sector remained the largest consumer in the country. Factories accounted for more than half of all distributed volume, recording a 4.5% increase in daily operations. Other essential sectors, such as chemical and fertilizer production, also posted positive results.

New frontiers and the growth of the free market

Looking ahead, distributors are crafting strategies to expand the fuel’s participation in new areas, such as data center projects and heavy transport. The sector’s representative body seeks to ensure that high‑consumption tech ventures have access to tax incentives when using the fuel as a low‑emission source.

In contrast, the free gas market continues to gain traction among large industrial consumers. This arrangement allows direct negotiation of volumes and rates with various suppliers, stimulating the economy and ensuring greater competitiveness for large companies across the country.
